Coast shuns setbacks

THE AFL North Coast representative team continued its dominance in Interleague fixtures with an impressive 120-point win over the Tamworth/Armidale side at Bellevue Oval on Saturday.

Cruelled by injuries and player unavailability before the match, it was the Coast side that jumped out of the blocks in a spirited opening quarter.

North Coast coach Peter Chadwick was one who had to come out of retirement and pull on the boots and ended up being a revelation at full-forward with three first-half goals.

North Coast held a match-winning lead at half-time after kicking nine unanswered goals in the second quarter.

It was all one-way traffic as captain Brad Giri and vice-captain Monty Schmidt were among those for the away side dominating the clearances.

Despite some concerns about the lack of height over the park North Coast were far superior in the aerial duels.

Ben Miller rucked well and gave his side first use of the football as did Aaron Clarke in his time in the middle.

In saying this, Clarke did most of his damage across half-forward. The Nambucca Valley star continued his stellar year with a seven-goal performance that earned him the best-on-ground award.

Tamworth/Armidale were more competitive in the second half, but were unable to stop the North Coast side extending their lead. Jim Angel and Justin Darby repelled the opposition’s advances forward while Matthew Lill and Darby Pearce were prominent in attack.

Simplicity was the key in the North Coast’s game plan. They used their speed and skills to gain an advantage over the home side with Kris Rundell especially dynamic on the wing.

The young brigade of Liam Carroll, Jed Ellis-Cluff and Sam Turner worked their way into the action as the match progressed in another indication on the day of the bright future of AFL on the North Coast.
