Rising stars take on the world

TWO of the Sunshine Coast's rising stars have been pressing their claims on the world surfing scene at the Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro in Spain.

Chris Friend was set to join Mitch Coleborn in round three of the ASP 5-Star event at Playa De Pantin last night after winning his second-round heat in a solid two-metre swell.

Friend recorded a two-wave total of 9.10 (out of 20) to edge a trio of rivals and earn his berth in the remaining field of 64.

The event represents a prime chance for Friend and Surman, who are hoping to improve their standings on the world surfing scene.

Friend is ranked 214th in the world and Coleborn is nestled among the top 100, in 90th place.

The Coast's highest-profile surfer, Coolum Beach's Julian Wilson is ranked 12th in the world and has been pushing his claims for ASP World Tour rookie-of-the-year award.

In 17th place in the 2011 world title race, Wilson trails fellow debutant Alejo Muniz, who is 11th in the standings.

It is evidently a friendly rivalry between the pair.

During the highly lucrative Quiksilver Pro in New York last week, the 21-year-old Brazilian sent Wilson an online message saying, "Good job today. This is a fun rookie of the year race".

And when Muniz went on to claim a career-best third place finish in the $1 million event, Wilson was among the first to congratulate him.

The next stop on the ASP World Tour is at Trestles in California, the $425,000 Hurley Pro. It is likely to get under way on Sunday.
