More than 100 people were injured in the incident, which happened at the end celebrations, just after 10pm local time.

A 21-year-old Noosa woman and a 23-year-old boyfriend, who wished to remain anonymous, were at the celebrations.

"We watched the fireworks along the beach in Nice about 10pm," she said.

"At 10.30pm we walked back to head to our hotel and we saw people running. It was in Old Town.

"People were everywhere. Running.

"I heard gun shots, and sirens of police/ambulances. We sprinted away.

"I heard some news about a car full of men stopped in the crowd.

"I can't confirm if they were gun shots 100% as I didn't look back but everyone was running screaming and it was so scary."

French prosecutors suspect the incident was a planned terrorist attack.

Anyone worried about Australian friends and family who are believed to be in the area should phone the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on 1300 555 135 or +61 2 6261 3305.
