Coast commuters break state bus ride records

A BOOMING community has prompted a new direct bus route for school kids as Sunshine Coast commuters help drive the state’s patronage to record results.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey has announced new morning and afternoon bus services extending from Baringa to nearby schools from September 9.

Despite 200 new weekly bus services launched earlier this year, Mr Bailey said it didn’t cater for the growing number of students in the area.

Mr Bailey said Sunshine Coast commuters helped bring patronage numbers in the state to a record high.

“We know that for every student taking public transport, it means less cars during the pick up and drop off time at school, benefiting everyone,” he said.

“These new changes add to the $7.5 million Palaszczuk Government commitment to develop a comprehensive public transport plan for the region together with council, as well as the $371 million smart ticketing system and Beerburrum to Nambour rail project.”

Bus trips on the Sunshine Coast grew 3.8 per cent on the previous financial year, with 5.82 million trips taken in 2018-19, while almost 510,000 trips were taken on the Sunshine Coast rail network.

The improvements include the extension of route 5737 both morning and afternoon services between Baringa and Meridan State College, and a trial of the extension of 5804 services between Valley Drive, Doonan, and St Andrew’s Anglican College.

A new morning and afternoon service would be implemented between Marcoola and Good Samaritan College, and Parkland Estate and Bli Bli State School.

Another morning service between Tewantin and Sunshine Beach High School would also be added to manage passenger loads.
