Gatton rifle club receives upgrade

FOR the Gatton-Glenore Grove Rifle Club, there was only one way to finish 2014, and that was with a bang.

Members gathered at the shooting range, just outside of Gatton, for a social shoot on Saturday to not only celebrate Christmas but the past 12 months of on-target shooting.

However, before pulling the trigger, members got their hands dirty for a special club working bee.

The club installed new guttering, a new water tank and also cleaned up around the clubhouse.

The upgrades came thanks to a successful Jupiter's Casino grant application earlier in the year, with the club successfully securing $11,000 in funding.

Gatton-Glenore Grove Rifle Club captain Colin Greenwood said the upgrades would help to make the club more user-friendly for members.

"We've been trying to get it for the last three years and we got the money in July and have 12 months to spend it all," he said.

"It'll give us a better and cleaner system and we'll have better water collection for members for drinking.

"We have new toilets scheduled to be put in next year too."

Greenwood said target rifle shooting was a highly disciplined sport.

"Rifle shooting is one of the safest sports in Australia and there hasn't been a fatality in these ranges since starting in 1914," Greenwood said.

"We as a club are there to teach people target rifle firearm safety and discipline."
