Close shave for truck driver

A TRUCK driver had a lucky escape in an accident at Sawtell today when a pole came down on top of his pantech truck and was wedged behind the cabin.

Witnesses told police the light rigid vehicle struck the roadside pole as it passed a sedan turning off Lyons Rd.

The accident happened near the Banool St intersection shortly after noon.

The pole snapped off at the base and fell on top of the truck, bringing down a tension wire used to support a live power pole on the opposite side of the road.

Residents directed traffic around the hazard as police closed off the roadway.

“We heard the loud bang from inside the salon,” said Nicola Taylor of Sabai Beauty Therapy.

“It’s a good thing it wasn’t a live wire that fell over the road. The neighbourhood lost power for a short time after the accident.”

Lyons Rd was closed briefly as an Essential Energy crewman winched the power pole off the truck and rolled it off the road.

Police said inquires were continuing into the cause of the accident.
