Clemesha steps up in Firebirds' draw
NETBALL: There was another Darling Downs talent in the GK bib for the Queensland Firebirds as the foundations were laid for a competitive Queensland derby in the new Super Netball league.
Allora's Laura Geitz is on an indefinite break from the game and will not be part of the Firebirds' title defence.
But former Toowoomba talent Laura Clemesha took over in defence for the Firebirds as they started their Super Netball season with a 56-56 draw against Sunshine Coast at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday.
Sunshine Coast is a new team established for the maiden Super Netball league so this was the first competitive meeting between the two Queensland teams.
They could be very competitive over the years judging by the first instalment of the Queensland derby.
It was a tough first round for Clemesha as she marked up on Lightning goal shooter Caitlin Bassett.
The national representative shot well sinking 48 goals from 52 attempts for a 92 per cent success rate.
