THEY came from Canada; they came from New Zealand; they came from Thailand; they came from Lucinda in Queensland - and they came from just around the corner.

The 50th year reunion of the 44-strong Class of 1961 from Coffs Harbour High School has been a truly international affair, with returnees bringing with them interests and careers as diverse as their current addresses.

Lois Smith, nee Watt, who came from Vancouver Island in Canada, where she made a "temporary" stop more than 40 years ago, said even after half a century, she had been able to recognise all her classmates.

Retired international Qantas pilot Hal Griffiths, who came from New Zealand via Tasmania, bringing bottles of wine from his Tasmanian vineyard, is still grateful to the Coffs Harbour used car dealer and the motorcycle cop who made it possible for him to learn to fly.
