Claims M’boro transit centre in a ‘disgraceful state’

MARYBOROUGH woman Pat Phillips says she has been watching the Lennox St transit centre fall in a "disgraceful state" over the last seven years.

Ms Phillips is sick of sitting among the graffitied walls and ground covered in rubbish and chewing gum as she waits for her almost weekly bus to Brisbane.

There are no water fountains, vending machines or toilets that can be accessed by the public at any time.

The transit centre is owned by the Green Group, who also own Station Square shopping centre, and leased to Translink Queensland.

A Queensland Rail spokesperson said the issue of cleanliness had ben raised with the Green Group.

"Queensland Rail is a tenant in the Maryborough Transit Centre facility, where we have for some years run a small travel centre and booking office, open from Monday to Friday during working hours.

"While we ensure the upkeep and tidiness of our own leased premises, the remainder of the site, which is empty, is owned by a private company.

"We have contacted them about the issues raised about the amenities and cleanliness of this location and to discuss how we can work together to make improvements.

The spokesman said the toilets at the facility were "permanently closed several years ago, due to them being damaged by vandals".

Ms Phillips is calling for those responsible for maintaining the site to clean up the area.

"I just can't imagine what this is doing to our tourism," Ms Phillips said.

"Imagine being a visitor, and the first place you see in Maryborough is this bus stop; what would that say to you about the place?"

Ms Phillips said given how important the centre was to people living in Maryborough and visiting the area, it should be better maintained.

"I'm usually here early in the morning and it is not a nice place to be at that time," she said.

"Anyone can come here and do God knows what - there is no security."

The Green Group declined to comment on the maintenance of the transit centre, and recommended the Chronicle speak to the Translink department.
