Claims are missing the point on national debt level

CLAIMS that the Coalition has doubled Labor's debts from Andrew Moran (Daily, June 1), miss one critical point.

Like a plane travelling at a fixed altitude, Mr Howard had the nation in the black and on track.

In just six years, Kevin Rudd and Julia left us in a death dive, with debt and deficit out of control.

For those lacking economic training, deficits result from outgoings exceeding revenue, which accumulate over time into debt.

So while the aircraft we call Australia did continue to descend under the Coalition leading to rising debt, it was only because attempts to rein in spending were blocked at every turn by Labor in the Senate.

In the end though, the Coalition got us there, with spending restraint, job creation and improved business conditions. The aircraft is now flying level again; albeit with a mountain of debt to pay down over the next decade.

Paying off Labor's damage is about protecting our children from having to pick up the tab.

Labor's extravagant tax and spend agenda always hurts more than it helps in sugar hits, handouts and largess to union mates.

Mr Morrison has embarked upon a steady repair job.

Thank goodness Australian voters saw it that way as well.
