Ciggie butt placed thief at scene

A COFFS Harbour man has been sentenced to two years in jail for stealing more than $30,000 in property in a Sandy Beach home invasion.

On November 29, 2014, Beau Michael Jones, 23, used a hoe to force his way into the Saye Cl home before stealing items including a washing machine, jewellery, bikes, passports and birth certificates.

Jones discarded a cigarette butt in the walk-in- robe that later placed him at the scene by forensics.

Three days after the break in, Jones used a stolen credit credit to buy $70 worth of goods from Supre in Park Beach Plaza.

He was arrested in Surfers Paradise that month after being detected driving a car with stolen number plates.

The court heard stolen property in the car was traced to two break and enters in NSW, including the offence at Sandy Beach.

Jones later pleaded guilty to the charges.

In Coffs Harbour District Court on Thursday, Judge Penny Hock sentenced him to two years in jail with a one year non-parole period.

A co-accused woman has also been charged and her matters are before the court.
