Christmas Day is for joining in fun

WHETHER you’re a backpacker, elderly or can’t get home for Christmas, people from all walks of life are invited to celebrate the special day at the Orphans Christmas at Coffs Harbour Botanical Gardens.

Now in its ninth year, organiser Julie Ferguson said the lunch brought together people who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day and provided a celebration full of joy and free from judgment.

“There’s still a lot of stigma being alone on Christmas and we’re starting to break that down.

“This is a place you can come no matter who you are,” Ms Ferguson said.

After spending Christmas alone in 2006, Julie promised herself she would never spend it alone again.

So she created the Orphan’s Christmas with the help of friend Robyn, who has retired due to illness.

Starting out with just 16 people, the lunch catered to 180 people last year.
