Six-year-old still critical after yesterday's fatal crash

Update 8.30am: A SIX-year-old boy that has severe head injuries after a two-vehicle fatal crash yesterday is still in a critical, but now stable, condition in hospital.

The boy was flown to Queensland's Children Hospital yesterday afternoon after a crash on the Yeppoon Rd at the Artillery Rd intersection.

A nine-year-old girl, who also sustained severe head injuries, died after the accident.

Three other children and two adults were taken to Rockhampton Hospital with minor injuries and in stable conditions.

UPDATE 4pm: A SIX-year-old boy that was travelling in the same car as the nine-year-old girl who died from Sunday morning's crash, has life-threatening injuries and has been flown to Brisbane.

The Queensland Police Service has released more information about the tragic crash.

The first vehicle, a blue Toyota hatchback contained a 40-year-old Emu Park woman, a six-year-old boy and two girls aged nine and ten.

A 33-year-old woman was driving the second vehicle, a grey Toyota hatchback, with two female passengers aged eight and 12.

UPDATE 2.40PM: A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl has died after sustaining fatal injuries in a two-vehicle crash this morning.

Queensland Police have just confirmed the heart breaking news.

A spokesman said a six-year-old male was in the ICU at Rockhampton Hospital.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said a retrieval medical team had flown in with the Royal Flying Doctors Service and had been taken to Rockhampton Hospital to assist with the transport of a child patient involved in the crash.

Emergency services were called the scene of the crash on the corner of Yeppoon Rd and Artillery Rd about 9.45am.

Motorists had stopped to help those in the vehicles involved in the crash.

Three other children and two adults were taken to Rockhampton Hospital with minor injuries and in stable conditions.

UPDATE 1PM: EMERGENCY services personnel have praised members of the public who rushed to help those injured in a serious crash on Yeppoon Rd this morning.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services station officer Barry Thompson said crews had prepared for the severity of the crash after initial reports from the scene.

By the time QFES crews arrived, all children and two adults were out of the two vehicles except for one.

That child had to be cut from the vehicle using hydraulic equipment.

Mr Thompson said it was a difficult incident for emergency services.

"It was quite warm, there were a large number of people who had stopped at the incident before emergency services arrived," he said.

"All the children involved needed attention in one way or another, so it was a very hands-on for quite a period of time."

Mr Thompson said any accident involving children was tough on first responders.

"I've spoken to a number of bystanders and the actions they carried out before the arrival of QAS and QFES personnel definitely assisted with the situation," he said.

"There were people in shock, varying degrees of injuries.

"I think it's going to take a toll on my crews and we will be going through out debriefing procedures once we get back to Rockhampton."

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the crash and there could be some delays on Yeppoon Rd for several hours.

UPDATE 12.20PM: FIVE children and two female adults were in the two vehicles which crashed this morning on Yeppoon Road.

Queensland Police have just issued information about this morning's crash which occurred about 9.40am.

Police and emergency services are still at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Artillery Road and Yeppoon Road, Ironpot.

QPS says the first vehicle had a woman and two children inside. There was a woman and three children in the second vehicle.

Early information indicates that one vehicle was travelling east on Yeppoon Road when it entered the middle of the intersection, collided with the side of the other car which had been heading north on Artillery Road.

Two children from the second vehicle have been transported to hospital in a critical condition.

Traffic is currently being diverted along Emu Park Road.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

UPDATE 11.20AM: TWO children under the age of 10 have been confirmed to be in a critical condition suffering head injuries and abdominal injuries after a crash this morning.

The crash occurred on the Yeppoon Rd and Artillery Rd intersection just after 9.30am.

Two sedans were involved.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the two children had been transported to Rockhampton Hospital in a critical condition - one with head and abdominal injuries and another, who was trapped, with head injuries.

They were transported by road.

The spokesman said five others were also transported in a stable condition with minor injuries.

The west bound lane has reopened to traffic but motorists are urged to still use the detours as emergency services continue to assess the scene and clean up.

Reports earlier indicated a three-year-old female suffered a cardiac arrest on the side of the road with bystanders performing CPR, while another six-year-old female was trapped in a vehicle. These reports have yet to be confirmed.

UPDATE 10.50am: ALL patients from a serious two-vehicle accident on Yeppoon Rd have been transported from the scene.

Emergency services are still at the scene where two sedans collided at the Cawarral turn off this morning.

Reports indicate seven people were being transported to Rockhampton Hospital including a three-year-old female who had a cardiac arrest on the side of the road and a six-year-old female who had been trapped in a vehicle.

UPDATE 10.20AM: The RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service is en route to a serious two vehicle crash on the Yeppoon Rd.

Reports indicate a three-year-old female went into cardiac arrest with bystanders conducting CPR.

It is believed a six-year-old female was initially trapped but emergency services have assisted to get her out of the vehicle.

Reports indicate seven people are expected to be transported to Rockhampton Hospital.

The crash occurred on the Yeppoon Rd near the Artillery Rd intersection.

Reports indicate one child is unconscious and others injured in the crash.

It is believed the crash is near or on the Artillery Rd, Ironpot, intersection.

There are children aged seven, 10 and 11 involved.

Reports indicate between eight to 10 people are involved.
