Child drowns despite resuscitation

A TODDLER has drowned in the Bellinger River at Mylestom.

Ambulance paramedics and police descended on the village at 2.30 yesterday afternoon after a child was found floating in the river near the boardwalk in George Street.

An ambulance spokesperson said when officers arrived, bystanders were already trying to resuscitate the 18-month-old boy.

The spokesperson said paramedics were told the little boy may have been submerged for up to five minutes before he was found.

Despite the determined and constant efforts of the paramedics, the little boy could not be revived and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the Coffs Harbour Hospital.

It is not known how the toddler came to be in the river.

It is believed his family live in Mylestom.
