Man recovering after Urunga crash

SLOWLY, but surely, a young man is recovering from a shocking highway smash near Urunga last week.

The 23-year-old from the Newcastle suburb of Mayfield was hurled 20 metres from his wreck when it slammed into a B-double at 10.40pm last Tuesday.

He received serious head, chest and leg injuries and had been in a critical condition in Coffs Harbour Health Campus.

A North Coast Area Health Service spokeswoman yesterday confirmed he was improving and was now in a serious condition.

The man’s northbound Daihatsu Charade appears to have skidded in the wet and crossed to the wrong side of the road into the path of the oncoming B-double, driven by a Queensland man, 59. The dreadful accident happened on a sweeping left-hand bend about 800 metres north of Martells Road.

The Daihatsu careered off the road and came to rest down an embankment. The B-double continued hurtling south for another 100 metres before veering off the road and ploughing through scrub. The truck driver was treated for shock.
