Chance to nominate sports achiever for monthly award
SPORTS STAR: Nominations are welcome for the senior and junior sports star of the month awards, which are sponsored by the Warwick Credit Union and Daily News.
The Warwick Credit Union and Daily News first jointly sponsored the junior awards in 1993 when Dean Butler from cricket and hockey was the junior sports star of the year.
Butler went on to also win a senior sports star of the year award and a decade later was part of the first Australian team to win gold in men's hockey at the Olympics.
He is one of a number of monthly winners who have gone on to greater success.
Sports star of the year winners down the years include retired Australian netball captain Laura Geitz, current Queensland Bulls Player of the Year Mark Steketee, Commonwealth Games silver medallist Matthew Denny, Queensland Maroons State of Origin rugby league player Stephanie Hancock and rugby union player Greg Holmes.
Holmes had a long career with the Queensland Reds and also played for the Wallabies before taking up a contract as a professional player in the United Kingdom.
Hancock won an annual sports award when she was an Australian champion javelin thrower and before she became a second generation Australian rugby league representative.
His sports star of the year award was in athletics at a time he was winning medals at state and national level in shot put, discus and hammer.
Nominations are requested by the fifth of each month and can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org or left at the Daily News office at 56 Kenilworth St. Information from sports editor Gerard Walsh on 46601313.
The awards are for athletes from the Warwick, Allora, Clifton, Killarney, Inglewood and Texas areas. Junior awards cover athletes 17 years and under, on the last day of the nominated month. Senior awards for 18 and over.
No athlete is able to win both junior and senior awards in the same calendar year.
