Chance of a lifetime

NORTH Coast Football’s 15 years boys Youth League squad are preparing to play the match of their lives this afternoon in Taree.

Should victory come their way, they will have a once-in-a-lifetime shot at getting on the plane to Manchester, England, to play in a worldwide competition for 15 year olds.

The Manchester United Premier Cup (MUPC) is a tournament which started out at a regional level to help Manchester United FC promote and identify upcoming football talent. This year, 20 countries will take part including Australia.

One 15 years team – that’s right, only one – from Australia will attend the MUPC in August on an all expenses paid trip to the UK thanks to Nike, the worldwide sponsor of the tournament. But Australia must first select its representative from the many zones around the country.

And that selection tournament is to be held in Melbourne in April.

The winner of the Australian play-off will then be pitted against the best team from New Zealand for the Oceania Championship and the opportunity to participate in the finals of the MUPC in July.

However, the first step for the boys from North Coast is to earn the nomination from Northern NSW and that will be decided this afternoon when the local representative team face Newcastle Football in a one off, winner take all match.
