Census 2016 to go fully digital

THE future of the nation's biggest data-gathering exercise, the Census, has been secured, with $250 million to go to the Australian Bureau of Statistics over the next five years.

Treasurer Joe Hockey announced the funds on Thursday, after recent reports of doubts about the bureau's ability to complete future Census due to staff cuts and out-of-date technology.

Mr Hockey said the funds would largely go to updating old information technology systems at the bureau, but would also lead to the nation's first "fully digital" Census in 2016.
