Celebration takes the cake for Coast decorators

CUTTING into a cake topped with hundreds of intricate handmade sugar roses makes any decorator wince.

But this time it was different, this cake was made for the 30th anniversary of the Queensland Cake Decorators' Association, Sunshine Coast branch.

Branch president Dawn Hebblewhite said that next to the cake, which was baked by one member and iced by another, stood a vase of sugar flowers each made by members.

Yesterday, the branch held a demonstration day at Caloundra attracting more than 90 decorators from Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Mackay, Gold Coast Dalby, Darling Downs and New South Wales.

Along with a visit from three suppliers, five guest cake decorators showed new methods and ideas including how to make flowers, chocolate flowers and novelty cakes.

Ms Hebblewhite, one of the original members of the Sunshine Coast branch, started cake decorating about 33 years ago.

"A friend and I did it together," she said.

"The first thing I learnt was how to do a rose."

Ms Hebblewhite, who specialised in novelty cakes, said the longest time she had spent decorating a single cake was a week, "if not more". "I like to do all my flowers with white icing and then colour them," she said.

"When you see the finished product it's worth it."

Cake decorating has become widely popular with women - and men - of all ages.

"It appeals to everyone, we've got a few men in the branch who have taken out all the major prizes for state and national," she said.

"At the moment there's a big hype with patty cakes - patty cakes have brought it back into the lime light.

"Everyone can put some sort of decoration on, or buy the decoration."
