Honour Australia Day at Bellingen

BELLINGEN will host this year's Bellingen Shire Australia Day celebrations and awards ceremony.

A family fun day is planned with activities commencing with an 8am sausage sizzle the Maam Gaduying (Council) Park.

The Bellinger River District Pipe Band will be performing at 9am followed by the girl guides and scouts flag-raising ceremony at 9.30am.

Entertainment will continue throughout the morning with performances by the Akabella Choir, Nat's Fun Singing Group, and more.

There will also be a range of supporting activities including markets stalls, exhibits, a jumping castle and members of the Light Horse Brigade.

The Red Cross will be serving morning tea.

The Shire's Australia Day ambassador, acclaimed writer and actor Bruce Venables, will be presenting the community awards.

Mr Venables was a former Tasmanian and Hong Kong police officer before embarking on his artistic career path.

The official ceremony, beginning at noon, will be held in the Bellingen Memorial Hall.

Shire mayor, Mark Troy, said the day was a great opportunity for everyone to celebrate what makes Australia unique and recognise those members of the community for their voluntary work and talent.

“I encourage all to come along and enjoy Australia Day and celebrate being party of this wonderful country,” Cr Troy said.

This year a new award category has been added, the Community Service Citizen of the Year.
