Cathy shares her pregnancy news
SHE'S conquered challenges presented by some of the world's best athletes.
Now, Mackay-born Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman is facing her next great challenge: motherhood.
The champion runner has revealed she is more than three months pregnant with her first child in an exclusive interview with New Idea.
“I am so totally lost in love with this baby already,” Ms Freeman told the magazine.
“I think it will take my breath away when we first meet.”
The magazine says Ms Freeman, who turns 38 next week, chats “excitedly” about when she and husband James Murch first saw their baby on ultrasound in its latest issue, which is on sale from today.
“I was totally overwhelmed when I saw the ultrasound,” she told the magazine. “And hearing its heartbeat. It's funny because it was like I was having an out-of-body experience but it was obviously happening in there, in my tummy.”
New Idea says Ms Freeman's pregnancy has triggered type two diabetes, a disease that runs in her family.
She revealed she must test her blood sugar levels and inject herself with insulin four times a day.
“It came as a jolt at first.
“Being an elite athlete I was really healthy and I was really fit – I was one of the fittest women in the world.
“And then all of a sudden your body is disappointing you, in a way.
“And it's like your pride gets hurt.
“They say I have type two diabetes but there is a chance it could go away after the baby's born. So we'll just wait and see.”
Ms Freeman's pregnancy comes 11 years after she completed a history-making run to win a gold medal at Sydney's Olympic Games.
