Cassie Sainsbury begs for help, but uncle says 'no way'

ACCUSED cocaine trafficker Cassie Sainsbury has launched an urgent appeal for taxpayer funding on the eve of a new court hearing amid fears she will not receive a fair trial in the ruthless Colombian justice system.

But her Adelaide-based uncle has hit back at the fresh cash plea, saying the Australian public should not foot the bill for her drug case defence.

The ex-Adelaide personal trainer, dubbed "Cocaine Cassie", has been in a maximum security Colombian women's jail for the past 100 days after her smuggling arrest in April.

As her South American legal team negotiate a potential prosecution plea deal ahead of a possible court hearing next week, her Bogota-based lawyer Orlando Herran on Tuesday said that her defence needed urgent assistance from the Australian Government.

Her uncle, Neil Sainsbury, 51, said he did not believe taxpayers should help pay his niece's legal costs.

"I don't understand why (we'd be) funding a drug runner overseas - no way," he told The Advertiser from his southern suburbs home.
