Caring for our region

WHAT does the Coffs Coast really care about?

This year a wide range of plans have been touted by Coffs Coast councils and State Government offices, and judging from the number of submissions made by members of the public the answer may surprise you.

The concept design for the Coffs Harbour Bypass attracted 176 submissions, with more than 150 made following the airing of plans to remove Luke Bowen Footbridge at Korora - but just as many submissions were made following a local businessman's application for a dog boarding kennel on Gaudrons Road (169).

Only four out of 50 public submissions were against a proposed rate rise as part of the Coffs Harbour City Council draft Management Plan, while a whopping 715 individuals and groups have submitted to the ongoing Coffs Harbour 2030 project.

Redevelopment of the Jetty Foreshores galvanised the community in 2007, with the Harbourside Project Concepts attracting 2443 submissions - yet this year's Jetty Foreshores Plan of Management only received 90 submissions.

What happens in the water is of prime concern, with more people commenting on the rezoning of Solitary Islands Marine Park (350) than the draft Plans of Management for Sawtell and Park Beach Reserves (30), and the Bellingen Shire Estuary Management Plan received more than 100 submissions due to the hot topic of speed limits on the Bellinger River.

The level of response may be indicative of a 'why bother?' attitude, a notion Member for Coffs Harbour Andrew Fraser highlighted in his submission to the RTA on the concept plan for the Coffs bypass.

“The RTA has consistently ignored the majority of opinion against the current proposal which have been put forward by residents,” Mr Fraser wrote.
