HERVEY Bay's Beth Mooney is living her dream and she's not ready to wake-up yet.

Why would she?

>> Latest sport news

She's just made her debut as captain of the Australian under-21 cricket team, the Shooting Stars, on a tour of New Zealand and she's performing well.

The talented opener and wicketkeeper is also making her national debut in the green and gold but the 18-year-old is showing no signs of being nervous either - far from it.

Mooney, who played for the Cavaliers men's team in the Fraser Coast Cricket A-grade competition whenever time and commitments allowed during the summer, led Australia to an impressive four-wicket win against the New Zealand Emerging Players in a one-dayer in Christchurch.

She led from the front as well.

The former Xavier College student took three catches to help dismiss the Kiwis for 223.

She backed that up by scoring 66 off 90 balls to help her team to six for 227.

Not surprisingly Mooney, who started playing cricket at seven, said she was thrilled with how life was going as an international cricketer.

"It's amazing," Mooney, who earned her Australian call-up after impressing national selectors while playing for the Queensland women's team, the Queensland Fire, in the Women's National Cricket League this season, said.

"I cannot even start to describe the feeling - I am loving every minute of it."

Well, almost every minute of it.

After her innings of 66, a knock which included seven boundaries, Mooney said she was disappointed.

"I felt really good while batting. That's why I was really disappointed to get out but that's cricket," she said.

"Besides, it felt real good to get a 50 under my belt for Australia and one which help us win."

The team is being coached by Australian legend, former captain and ICC Hall of Famer, Belinda Clark.

Mooney said she it was still sinking in that she was part of such a quality team.

"I've always said I'd love nothing more than to play for Australia and if I did, that would be a dream come true," she said.

"Well my dream has become reality and I love it."
