THE world's largest travel site TripAdvisor has announced South Africa's Cape Town as the most affordable destination for Australian travellers.
In its inaugural year, the TripIndex Room Service 2013, which outlines a cost-comparison of common incidental items and services that many travellers purchase when staying in a hotel, across various destinations around the world, has named "The Mother City" the best value for money destination across the globe.
The most affordable destination internationally for Australian travellers, with a total TripIndex Room Service cost of $19.14, Cape Town pipped Egypt's Sharm el Sheikh which took out second place with $23.21.
At more than four times the cost of Cape Town, Moscow in Russia topped the list as the costliest city with a TripIndex value of $80.60, followed by Paris which totals $67.09.
"Cape Town is undeniably one of the most popular destinations in the world.
"Not only is the silhouette of Cape Town's iconic Table Mountain breathtaking, but the city's pristine beaches and relaxed lifestyle, and proximity to the world-famous Cape Winelands around Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek, offers Australian travellers not only unique experiences, but also the best value for money," SA Tourism manager Ms Lalie Ngozi said.
"Travellers can also visit Robben Island, one of the most significant historical sites in South Africa, go cage diving with Great White sharks and enjoy delicious world-class local food and wine, all within a short distance from the centre of Cape Town," she said.
TripAdvisor's TripIndex Room Service is tracked against the Australian Dollar and is based on the combined cost of a club sandwich ordered on room service, a bottle of water, peanuts, mini bottle of vodka and a can of coke from the mini bar and the dry cleaning of one shirt.
All costs are taken from top TripAdvisor rated 4-star hotels in each featured destination.
Cape Town is located on the southern tip of South Africa between the Atlantic Ocean and the city's famous Table Mountain, and is also rated one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Affectionately known as the Mother City, Cape Town is South Africa's oldest city, founded in 1652.
