Canadian teen fined after hitting chair umpire

TENNIS: The Canadian teenager who whacked a ball into the face of a chair umpire during a Davis Cup has copped a fine by the International Tennis Federation.

Denis Shapovalov, 17, was disqualified after hitting Arnaud Gabas in the eye during his country's clash with Great Britain in Ottawa.

It gifted Kyle Edmund the match, and the visitors the tie 3-2, sending them into a quarter-final against France.

The ITF fined Shapovalov $US7000 (or $A9000), rather than the maximum $US10,000 ($A13,000), as it accepted he had not intentionally struck Gabas.

Gabas was taken to hospital as a precaution after suffering bruising and swelling around his left eye. No serious damage was found.

In a statement published on his Twitter account before the fine was announced, Shapovalov wrote: "There is no excuse for this behaviour and I take full responsibility for my action.

"I'm very sorry to Mr Gabas, to whom I apologised in person. Very sorry for letting my Davis Cup teammates down and for letting my country down.

"I apologise to all the tennis fans, to my supporters and my sponsors. I feel ashamed of my unprofessional behaviour and will accept any consequences as a result of my action."

The Israeli-born Shapovalov had been trailing Edmund 6-3, 6-4, 2-1 in the World Group first-round tie when the incident happened.
