AN ANIMAL welfare group is calling for people to make mittens for South Australian and Victorian Koalas with burnt paws.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) says it's urgently seeking mittens made from 100% cotton sheets or tea towels to protect injured paws.

IFAW says Koalas with burns to their paws need to have them treated with burn cream and wrapped in bandages.

They then need special cotton mittens to cover the dressing which need to be changed daily.

An unknown number of koalas have been displaced, injured and killed as bushfires spread through South Australia and Victoria.

A template for the mittens is available on IFAW's website.

They can be sent to 6 Belmore St, Sury Hills NSW 2010.
