Coffs to become 'camel coast'

CAMELS, the caravans of the desert, are heading to the coast.

The city's newest tourist attraction will see a camel ride company set up on Boambee Beach from next week.

After six years of trying to get the operation set up in New Zealand without success, Kiwi Allan Atkinson has established his business here.

“We've had a few trial runs at this stage and had about 130 people take a ride on our camels along Boambee Beach but we'll be back trading for good from next Wednesday,” Mr Atkinson said.

He says Coffs Coast Camels has 20 camels hailing from Alice Springs at the ready for beach rides, sunset/twilight tours and camel safaris.

The seasonal business, part-owned by experienced trainer Lionel Keegan, aims to cater to the crowds holidaying on the Coffs Coast over long weekends and school holidays.
