Calls for Valla Beach Rd speed zone reduction

NAMBUCCA Shire Council is calling on Roads and Maritime Services to have speed limits outside a preschool on Valla Beach Rd reduced to 40kmh.

For more than two decades there have been calls from the Valla Beach community for speed limits to be dropped between the railway bridge and the western side of Kuta Ave.

The council has made previous requests to RMS for a review of the section of road, but were refused on the basis that "the area is not a school zone", despite the Valla Beach Community Pre-School fronting the busy road.

A council report said the need was increased as preschool aged children were at even greater risk of running out onto the road than older students.

The council has received dozens of letters from residents calling for action in the area, including Valla Beach Pharmacy owner Jess Campbell.

Ms Campbell said every resident must pass through the area while entering or leaving Valla Beach and many drivers had difficulty negotiating the area.

Despite previous refusals from RMS to drop the speed limit, there may be fresh hope in the form of recently ratified legislation designed to improve pedestrian safety.

The State Government's Local Government Road Safety Program 2014-2017 Guidelines focus on high pedestrian activity areas such as shopping strips and schools and includes stronger provisions to reduce speed limits.

A motion to request a change from RMS through the Local Government Road Safety Program was put to a Nambucca Council meeting last week under a motion by Mayor Rhonda Hoban.
