WATCH: 7 shifts into a new job, student helps deliver baby

IT'S the call some emergency medical dispatchers wait their whole careers for.

But after just seven shifts on the job, student EMD Danielle Porter helped deliver a baby over the phone.

She was assisted by EMD Dominique White who said the delivery was one of the fastest she had assisted with.

Dominique said the call came through at the end of a busy 12-hour shift.

But not long after they had gone through the routine questions, the baby had arrived.

Dominique, who has been an EMD for two years, said she had dealt with several of these rare calls.

"It was just such a good high to go home on," she said.

"Everyone always covets those calls because we all want to help someone in that moment."

She said helping to deliver a healthy baby over the phone balanced out the more challenging aspects of the job.

"You do get a lot of hairy calls and unpleasant calls.

"These sorts of calls make up for these more unfortunate calls.

"I'll probably never meet mum or dad ... but it is something we will remember."

Danielle said she was told during training some EMDs never got to deliver a baby over the phone.

"It was definitely surprising to get one so quickly," she said.

"It was exciting, but it was very nerve-wracking, especially because of how fast everything moved.

"When you're in training, you've got more time to prepare and know exactly where you're going."
