Deba George signs with Taipans

THE moment Deba George has worked extremely hard for throughout his entire basketball career has finally arrived.

The McDonald's Meteors Most Valuable Player agreed to terms on a one-year deal with National Basketball League club the Cairns Taipans.

George has been a regular at Taipans trainings for many years as both a development and practise player, but until today had never officially signed on as one of the club's 10 contracted players.

With George's signature finalised, the Taipans' 2011-12 NBL roster is now complete.

It's a sweet reward for George who made the move south to Mackay from his home in Cairns to play for the McDonalds Meteors for the 2011 Queensland Basketball League season.

George was a standout all season, averaging a team-high 21.2 points per game, while also leading the QBL in 3-point shooting, connecting on a staggering 45% from long range.

He took out the Most Valuable Player award of the QBL grand final after finishing with 24 points, which included six three-pointers.

When asked about his new NBL opportunity, George remained humble.

"I am just thankful for the opportunity and I am definitely going to take it with both hands and do my best," George said.

McDonald's Meteors General Manager Joel Khalu said it was a sweet reward for years of hard work and dedication.

"Not only is Deba an outstanding basketball player he is also a great young man and I couldn't think of a better person for this to happen too," Khalu said.

"He has worked tirelessly on his game for years and it's fantastic to see him get this opportunity to finally play at that next level.

"The Mackay basketball community definitely embraced him like he was one of there own, so I have no doubt McDonald's Meteors fans will now support his rise into the NBL.

"I wouldn't be surprised if he had a breakout game early on in the season and then the rest of Australia will know about Deba and his ability to thrill also," Khalu added.

The Taipans tip-off their NBL campaign on October 8, with a game against arch rivals the Townsville Crocodiles in Cairns.
