Cahill urges Chelsea teammates to 'keep grounded'

GARY Cahill says he and his Chelsea teammates must focus on the long-term goal of winning the English Premier League after a 13th straight win over Stoke.

The Blues go into the new year leading Liverpool by six points but were forced to work hard at Stamford Bridge as Stoke twice fought back from being a goal down to level at 2-2.

Antonio Conte's side did eventually run out 4-2 winners but Cahill said it was tough.

"We have to keep grounded and focused on what we are doing,” the England defender said.

"This was difficult.

"We have a feeling at the minute that we don't think we will get beaten, but that is because we're working hard.”

"We showed good character.

"We never felt like we were beaten, but it was a tough game.”

Cahill put Chelsea in front but Bruno Martins Indi equalised at the start of the second half.

Willian then put the hosts ahead but Peter Crouch levelled, before Diego Costa and Willian again scored to see off a strong challenge from Stoke.

Georginio Wynaldum headed Liverpool's winner at Anfield as the Reds moved to second with a 1-0 success over Manchester City.

City dominated possession, especially in the second half, but couldn't create a clear-cut chance as the Reds held on for an important victory.

Goals from Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial rescued a win for Manchester United after it went down 1-0 to Middlesbrough at Old Trafford.

Grant Leadbitter's goal appeared to have the visitors on track for an upset win before Pogba struck in the 85th minute and Martial a minute later.

United has now won six games running.

West Brom moved to eighth with a 2-1 victory at Southampton, while Burnley hammered Sunderland 4-1 thanks to an Andre Gray hat-trick.

Swansea's wretched season continued with a fourth-straight defeat, this time a 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, which leaves the managerless club bottom, four points from safety.

Champion Leicester City eased its own relegation worries with a 1-0 home win over West Ham United.
