Bureau issues fire weather warning as temperatures soar

ANY bushfire that starts on the NSW North Coast today has the potential to threaten lives and destroy homes, the Rural Fire Service and Bureau of Meteorology have warned.

As hot dry winds continue to buffet the region, the Rural Fire Service has issued a severe fire danger rating and issued a total fire ban for the state's north east, while the Bureau has issued a fire weather warning.

Fire danger ratings reflect the level of risk fires could present rather than the risk of a fire starting.

The "severe" rating is the third-most serious rating in a scale of six, ranging from low-moderate to catastrophic.

People living in areas with a severe fire danger rating are advised, in the event of a fire, that leaving early is the safest options. Only people with well-prepared homes who are physically and mentally prepared for the effort of fighting off a fire should consider staying.
