Building up self esteem in kids
BUILDING kid's belief to cope with problems and believe in themselves is the focus of a camp being held in Coffs Harbour this month.
Local teacher and author Kathy Sheehan is hosting her 'Angel School' for a ninth year.
Her 'Sparky and Shady' program teaches children aged seven to 15 that they have three sides to themselves.
Their 'loving' side, Sparky, who wants what is best for them and everyone else; their 'fearful' side, Shady, who is scared they are not loved and that they have no purpose; and the side of them that gets to choose what they think, say and do.
Kathy, who was forced to confront her own identity 22 years ago when she had a serious motorcycle accident, said statistics show in a school class of 30 children, three will be affected by anxiety, seven will be victims of bullying and six will develop depression.
"I believe I can help these children understand how their body, feelings and thoughts all work together," Kathy said.
"I give them strategies to cope that not only work but also lead them to believe in themselves."
