MICRO car sales may be plummeting, but this bargain basement segment has been given some decent boosts of late.

Fiat's attractive 500 has been refreshed, a new Holden Spark arrived with desirable Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and now we've got a facelift for Mitsubishi's Mirage hatch - the cheapest 5-star ANCAP safety-rated car in Australia and 2015's runaway micro segment leader.

Priced from just $12,250 for the entry level five-speed manual 2016 Mirage ES (up a few hundred bucks over the outgoing one), there's a new front grille with chrome accents, plus a redesign for the bonnet, bumpers and wheels.

The cabin gets new seat trim and some chrome accents, while Mitsubishi says the new car has more intuitive steering response, better handling and improved ride comfort thanks to a new suspension tune. For smartphone fans, sadly there's no phone mirroring for the Mirage as found in the pricier Holden Spark micro.

2016 Mirages are cheapie things to run, with a return of 4.6-litres/100km and capped price servicing costing an average of $223 for the first four annual/15,000km services.

You can hop in an ES with CVT auto transmission for $14,250 or top spec LS (scoring the likes of 15-inch alloys, climate control and cruise control) also with the CVT auto for $15,250. But if you want any colour other than white (you will), it'll be an extra $550.
