Budget to beef up $11 billion industry
CENTRAL Queensland's beef industry will be supported to the tune of $3.9 million thanks to funding in this year's Budget.
The beef industry in Australia has been a major export earner, shipping beef to about 90 countries in 2017-18.
The LNP funding will support Rockhampton's next Beef Expo in May 2021.
Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said the event had a well-earned reputation as one of the world's best beef industry forums and a critical contributor to the region's economy.
"After 31 years of success, Beef Australia has become an international 'crossroads' for the beef industry, drawing thousands of exhibitors, competitors, spectators and supporters from across Queensland, Australia and the world,” Ms Landry said.
"The last event saw a record 1200 international delegates from more 43 countries attend and another 170 Australian companies take part.
"Our investment in Beef Week 2021 will not only facilitate new trade and export opportunities and expose the local supply chain to the international industry leaders, but help deliver a beefier economic windfall for the CQ economy.”
Central Queensland LNP Senator Matt Canavan said Beef Australia was an important international showcase for Australia's beef sector.
He said the beef industry was worth more than $11 billion and increasing national and international awareness of the industry's contribution to the nation's economy would increase the level of understanding of issues it faced.
