Budget boost for NSW North Coast

NEW health facilities, major building projects at schools and new police stations for the NSW North Coast have been unveiled as part of the 2010 Budget.

NSW Treasurer Eric Roozendaal handed down a budget with a surplus of $773 million for 2010/11 on Tuesday.

The North Coast is set to benefit from:

  • expansion of cancer treatment and facilities at Coffs Harbour, Lismore and Port Macquarie hospitals
  • new facilities at Maclean Hospital Emergency Department
  • upgrade to Grafton Base Hospital Emergency Department
  • building projects at Casino and Old Bar Public Schools, as well as building projects at Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Kyogle and Wauchope High Schools
  • building projects at Ballina, Murwillumbah and Wollongbar TAFEs
  • construction of 513 social and crisis accommodation units
  • planning and construction of new police stations at Kempsey and Tweed Heads
  • Upgrades to the Pacific Highway, including dual carriageway on Ballina Bypass, Moorland and Herons Creek, and duplication between Coffs Harbour and Woolgoolga
  • a bypass of the Bruxner Highway at Alstonville
  • Oxley Highway upgrade from Wrights Road to the Pacific Highway

Health is the major winner in the budget, with some 30 per cent of overall spending aiming to boost health provisions in rural and regional NSW, with mental health services also set to benefit.

"The government is building a better, stronger and more sustainable health system that will allow people to receive care in the best possible setting whether that is in the community, the hospital or in their home," Health Minister Carmel Tebbutt said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
