Buchanan and Willoughby lead charge

FIVE Aussie riders are at the gate and waiting to make an immediate impression when the campaign to win BMX gold starts with seeding heats at midnight tonight (AEST).

Caroline Buchanan, the world time trial champion, and men's world No.1 Sam Willoughby, will spearhead the Aussie assault.

World No.7 Brian Kirkham, No.17 Khalen Young and Lauren Reynolds, who is ranked in the top five, make up the rest of the line-up.

The sport made its Olympic debut in Beijing, but no Aussie medalled.

Willougby is keen to change that - he knows what a gold medal for BMX would do for his sport's profile.

"That's what the sport needs ... a medal, preferably gold."
