Brooker wins on day one of festival, ready for more action

RACING: Sunshine Coast jockey Tiffani Brooker claimed an impressive win at the Sunny Coast Race Fest on Friday and she's looking forward to returning to Corbould Park again, despite drawing wide alleys for Saturday.

A bold front-running display aboard the John Holcombe-trained Meyiwa Hitam Mawar saw her claim a two-length win in a maiden handicap (1600m) early in the festival.

"I haven't had much to do with the horse but I did a little bit of work on him last Saturday for John and his runs leading into that race were promising," she said.

"He was just going to have to get the right run and he was probably too good for them.

"He's still got a lot of learning to do but it's good he got the maiden (win) out of the way and I'm sure he'll go on with it."

Brooker has emerged as one of the state's emerging prospects, via an apprenticeship with leading Sunshine Coast trainer Stuart Kendrick.

She has enjoyed some good recent form, winning three of her past six outings.

"You're only as good as the horses you're on," she said.

"I'm riding a lot of track work here every morning for these (local) trainers and they've supported me and their stables are going well.

"I can't really say that there are many secrets to what I'm doing.

She's set for a few rides in the region's richest race day on Saturday.

"I reunite with Pennino, which I've had a fair bit of luck on," she said of the Darryl Hansen-trained two-year-old, which will compete in the Listed Oxlade Stakes (1200m).

"We've drawn a horrendous gate out in 15. She went a little bit amiss last start but she had excuses and she gets back to this track where she has won twice," she said.

"We'll see how the track is playing. She's a bit of a serious horse. There's no reason why she can't step up."

Among her other rides, Brooker is set to compete for Queensland's leading trainer Tony Gollan in the Listed Coughlan Stakes (1200m) for fillies and mares, aboard Of The Day.

"She's also drawn a sticky gate (14) but sometimes it doesn't matter that much here at the Sunny Coast," she said of the vast track.

The first race is at 12.42pm.
