Flights cancelled as fog causes chaos at Brisbane Airport

DELAYS of up to an hour have struck Brisbane Airport, causing chaos for travelling bound for parts of regional Queensland.

Shortly after 8am, the airport confirmed that flights could be delayed for 60 minutes or more as the transport hub went on "low visibility operations".

As of 9am, flights to Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Mackay and Moranbah have been delayed or cancelled.

Qantas flights to Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Townsville, Mackay, Mt Isa, Roma and Emerald which are taking off from Brisbane before lunchtime have been delayed.

Virgin flights to Mackay and Moranbah have also been delayed.

A Jetstar flight to Proserpine at 9.50am is currently on track for boarding.

Virgin passengers travelling from Brisbane to Gladstone at 8.55am have been told their flights are cancelled.

APN ARM's Grant Edwards was headed for Rockhampton for a mid-morning flight and said there were widespread delays.

"The service desks at the Virgin Australia end of the airport were packed," he said.

"There were 30-40 people in line trying to find alternative flights or make other arrangements...and Virgin staff were equally busy in the lounge."

"Most of the flights inbound were delayed by an hour, which obviously has a knock-on effect for those travelling outbound.

"I've never seen the Virgin lounge at this capacity, it's standing room only."
