SARAH Norman and Victoria Matthews' greatest wish is that their brother Sam Matthews could be with them to receive his Bravery Medal.
The Toowoomba sisters are proud Mr Matthews has been honoured posthumously for his efforts when water tore through their family home at Murphys Creek on January 10, 2011.
Mr Matthews, 20, was at home with Victoria and their parents Steven and Sandra when water began to inundate the house at a very fast rate.
He followed his parent's escape plan and pushed Victoria down the hallway and lifted her through the man hole into the roof cavity.
Mr Matthews tried to find his parents, but after realising they had been swept from the home, joined his sister in the ceiling.
He comforted her as they watched the water come to within half a metre of the ceiling.
Mrs Norman said her brother continued to help his neighbours once the water had subsided and assisted in the search for his parents, who did not survive the flood.
She was also at the property that day, but in a cottage separate from the main house.
"Sam didn't think he was doing anything brave or heroic," Mrs Norman said.
"It is nice that he is seen that way, but Sam would have been quite humble."
Mr Matthews was tragically killed in a fire at Murphys Creek on July 27, 2011.
