Bowditch hits seven birdies at $4.7 million USPGA event

STEVEN Bowditch continued his impressive year by shooting a seven under par in the first round of the $4.7 million US PGA Tour event in Illinois yesterday.

The Peregian product was one shot off the lead going into the second round of the John Deere Classic, which was scheduled to continue overnight.

Bowditch eagled the 10th, birdied seven holes and only bogeyed twice to produce one of his most promising starts since winning the $1.2 million Texas Open in April.

Americans Zach Johnson and Brian Harman were in first place after one round followed by South Africa's Rory Sabbatini.

"I found myself a little impatient in the weeks prior to this," Johnson said. "In the US Open, I made the cut, but it was pretty boring, bad golf after that."
