Bottle store workers overpower pistol-toting robber

WORKERS at a bottle store overpowered a would-be robber after the shop was set upon by a 27-year-old man carrying a sledge hammer and a pistol in Sydney's south.

At 1.15am on Sunday, the man was believed to have smashed his way through glass doors before threatening a shop assistant with the pistol and demanding cash from the safe.

As the staff member was following directions, the man was overpowered by other staff.

Police arrived at the Engadine store soon after.

Now the 27-year-old Kirawee man accused of the robbery is under police guard at Sutherland Hospital.

Police suspect the same man might have been involved in another bottle shop break-in just 15 minutes before he attempted to rob the Engadine shop.
