TO BE SUNG UNDERWATER

Tom McNeal

Little Brown Co (Hachette Aust)

RRP $29.99

UNTIL reading Tom McNeal’s To Be Sung Underwater I never thought a man could successfully write a romance novel.

Not only has he done that — he has shot to the top of my list for quality romance novels.

To Be Sung Underwater is a riveting and heartbreaking story about what can happen when you revisit the road not taken.

Judith Whitman believes in the sort of love that can sweep you away but she married more pragmatically.

As a 17-year-old in Nebraska, she discovered love with Willy Blunt, a love which shaped her life, but ultimately ended. But 20-years after the relationship ended she tracks Willy down to find out what might have been.

Set in three parts, between her current life, her past life and what could be the future, the novel explores some complex issues — love, betrayal, violence and death.

While many novels in the romance genre are saccharine sweet, To Be Sung Underwater delves into what makes people who they are and what has shaped them. I look forward to reading more from this extremely talented author.
