Bondit too good in Hospitality Cup
RENOWNED Coffs Harbour trainer Joe Janiak has claimed sweet consolation with Bondit winning the Hospitality Cup at today's Sportsman's Race Day after missing out on a start in the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup.
With experienced jockey Dale Spriggs at the helm, the seven year-old made a perfectly timed sprint to the line to take victory by a length over the Gordon Yorke trained Rosewater.
Despite trailing Prussian Moon for most of the race, Janiak believed it was in fact his gelding's start which set up the win.
"He hasn't had the best jump on him but today he was out of the gate better than usual and I think it gave us the edge in the end," Janiak said.
"The other day he ran well so I was confident no matter what race we ended up going in.
"It was Dale's first ride on Bondit and he did a great job to get the win."
An emergency for tomorrow's Coffs Harbour Gold Cup, Janiak said he was never confident of getting the gelding into the big one.
"When acceptances came in and we saw there were over 22 all looking for a run in the Cup I was doubtful Bondit would make the cut," he said
"It would have been nice to run in the Cup but it wasn't to be. Today's win definitely makes up for it.
"I have three other horses running on Cup Day and I am confident at least one of them will come home with a good result."
