Bogut named for Boomers’ crack at Games gold
BASKETBALL: Andrew Bogut has been picked to contest his third Olympics with the Boomers, despite recovering from a knee injury.
The NBA centre, who was recently traded from Golden State to Dallas, hyper-extended the knee during the Warriors’ finals campaign.
David Andersen, Cameron Bairstow, Aron Baynes, Ryan Broekhoff, Matthew Dellavedova, Chris Goulding, Joe Ingles, Kevin Lisch, Damian Martin, Patty Mills and Brock Motum make up the rest of the squad.
“This is certainly one of the strongest teams I’ve been a part of,” Mills said.
Bogut, 31, played in the 2004 and 2008 Games, but missed London 2012 with an ankle injury.
Veteran Anderson, now with ASVEL Basket in France, will represent Australia for the fourth time at the Olympics.
NBA draftees Ben Simmons and Thon Maker, and the injured Dante Exum, will sit out the Games.
Mills said the Boomers had their sights set on finishing on the podium.
“That is our goal and that is what we set out to do and we all believe in it which is obviously key,” he said.
“We all understand it is going to be a very hard task but the belief in each other that we can get it done is very exciting.”
