BMX world champ Caroline Buchanan starts with a ute

LIFE has plenty of ups and downs for Caroline Buchanan. And that's the way she likes it.

The talented Canberra-based BMX and mountain bike rider is currently preparing to defend her world BMX title in the Netherlands.

We caught up with her, just after she touched down in Europe, to discuss her motoring interests and past.

What was your first car?

Being a girl in a boys' world racing BMX and mountain bikes, it's only fitting that my first car was a black V6 Holden VU ute.

I could drive myself to training, BMX tracks or to go downhill mountain biking with my buddies. I would load up all the bikes in the back, and the rest is history.

Black on black, lowered, loud exhaust, hard cover and pink floor mats - it was my firstborn.

What are you driving now?

Outgrowing my "Black Betty" ute and coming onboard as an ambassador with Subaru, a huge supporter of sport and in particular cycling, I am fortunate enough now to drive a Subaru XV. Yes, it's black on black.

I love that I have more than one spare seat now - it's very practical for around the city, but also has lots of space inside for my bikes and the ability to take it off road to the best mountain bike trails in Australia.

What cars did your family have while you were growing up?

My dad always had large people-moving cars to cater for all of our bikes. I vividly remember when we got our first family car with electric windows - it was a Ford Falcon - I broke them within the first hour ... up, down, up, down, up, down. My brother Sam, who got me into racing BMX at the age of five, has always been the car freak in the family, owning an orange Holden Torana, black HQ Holden ute, BMWs, and now he drives a black Chrysler 300C.

What is your greatest frustration on the road?

Those drivers that huff and puff and blow the house down to overtake you on double lines. Risk all our lives to end up 10 metres in front of me and awkwardly pulled up at the same traffic light five minutes after.

I always love giving them a big cheesy smile at those traffic lights.

Do you have any preferred driving music?

I am a big fan of Aussie hip hop. Always a great drive when Bliss n Eso tunes are on.

If you were to pick anyone in the world to go on a road trip, who would it be?

Pink…enough said. She is awesome. #Dream.

What is your dream car?

A custom matte black on black Subaru WRX.
