Bloodbath ends in upset as Horn hangs on to win

BOXING: Jeff Horn has pulled off one of the greatest upsets in boxing, defeating legend Manny Pacquiao by unanimous decision in a wild battle in Brisbane.

It was a win against the odds that threatened to be stopped after the ninth round but the Australian school teacher soldiered on and is now the new WBO welterweight champion.

Dubbed the "Battle of Brisbane”, a more accurate assessment of the fight would be to liken it to a war.

After 12 rounds, the decision went to the judges' cards with Horn victorious 117-111, 115-113, 115-113.

"I don't know what's coming up next but it's very exciting,” Horn said after the victory.

Pacquiao was the hot favourite but Horn defied the odds to produce an upset over the Filipino legend.

So what's next? The rematch, of course.

Pacquiao, 38, confirmed he will now invoke a rematch clause with their next bout to come later in the year.

"Absolutely. We will have rematch. No problem,” Pacquiao said when asked if he would trigger the clause he had inserted into the fight contract.

A crowd of more than 50,000 was on hand at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium and many more watched the bout around the world with their next clash set to surpass those numbers.

But the upset almost didn't happen.

While Horn dominated the opening rounds, Pacquiao threatened to finish the fight in the ninth.

The veteran stunned Horn several times with the referee telling Horn and his corner to: "show me something in this round or I'm stopping the fight”.

Horn showed he had heart and defied the odds.

"That's heart getting through that round,” Horn said of the ninth.

"Getting hit and being able to push on.”

Horn kept coming at Pacquiao until the end, bullying the Filipino in a physical bloodbath to claim the title.
