Blaze damages home
A BUNDABERG West couple’s home has been severely damaged after fire tore through the Powers St house last night.
The blaze caused extensive visible damage to the roof and the NewsMail understands parts of the home were gutted.
A neighbour, who did not wish to be identified, told the NewsMail he and his wife had noticed a large amount of smoke billowing from the home about 6.30pm.
“I panicked (when I saw the smoke) and my wife called Triple 0,” he said.
The man said his neighbours were not home when the fire broke out.
But the couple soon arrived and watched as firefighters struggled to bring the blaze under control.
Crews from three fire trucks descended on the blaze, attacking it from the inside and out in order to minimise damage to the highset Queenslander.
It took firefighters about half an hour to control the blaze.
Bundaberg police also attended the scene to help firefighters, but Sergeant Michael Prickett said the fire was not being treated as suspicious.
The couple who live in the home declined to speak with the NewsMail last night.
The home previously belonged to Member for Bundaberg Jack Dempsey, who was upset at news of the fire.
