Bill amended to extend trawler ban
THE Federal Government has made two changes to its bill to keep the Dutch super trawler FV Abel Tasman out of Australian waters.
Environment Minister Tony Burke on Tuesday introduced an amendment to Commonwealth environment law to expand the assessment of the trawler's fishing quotas.
After three days of debate on the amendments, several more changes were attempted by the Opposition and the Greens, all of which failed.
Instead, to garner support of key independents, Mr Burke late yesterday introduced two new amendments to the bill, which was then passed just before parliament stood.
